Tour Peggy's Tiny Home in Florida

I'm Peggy and welcome to my tiny house tour. As I approach my 79th birthday in May, nearing 80, I'm filled with excitement rather than fear.

Living in this tiny house has given me a sense of control and independence that many people my age don't have. It's all about attitude, and I have a positive one about growing older.

Living in a tiny house

I've been living in my tiny house for a little over two years now. Built by Cornerstone, it's a cozy 438 square feet and 12 feet wide. I own both my tiny home and the land it sits on.

Welcome to Peg's tony home

My neighborhood includes four other tiny houses, and we all get along splendidly, supporting each other in this wonderful community.

Outdoor space

Outside, I have a deck where I enjoy reading, tending to my plants, and interacting with neighbors. One of my favorite activities is standing on the deck during a rainstorm, savoring the smells and sounds of the downpour.

1. Living room

The living room reflects my personality and tells the story of my life. My best friend and partner, my dog Buffy, loves this space too.

The living room features a futon that converts into a bed, an exercise bike for my physical therapy, and cherished items like a painting from my son and a piece of furniture made by my father.

2. Kitchen and dining

The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, ample cupboard space, a full-size stove, and a microwave. I have a smaller refrigerator by choice, as it's just enough for me.

I love cooking and experimenting with recipes, especially since I follow a strict diet due to various food intolerances. My kitchen also serves as a workspace for my favorite hobby: RC sailing.

3. Bathroom

The bathroom is thoughtfully designed with a full sink, storage space, and a higher, handicap-accessible toilet. I also have a full bath, which I love for its comfort and convenience.

4. Bedroom

My bedroom, located on the ground floor, features a barn door and a full closet. The bed, which has an adjustable top, is perfect for relaxing and watching TV.

The washer and dryer are also in the bedroom, making laundry tasks easy and convenient.

The journey to a tiny house

Transitioning from a large home to this tiny house was challenging, especially since it was my mom's home filled with family heirlooms and memories.

After an estate sale, I moved into my tiny house, built by Cornerstone. They listened carefully to my needs and delivered exactly what I wanted.

Costs and benefits

Selling my mom's house financed my tiny home, which cost $185,000, including the land.

Now, my living expenses are significantly lower, with no HOA fees and reduced utility costs. This financial freedom is crucial as I live on Social Security and a small mutual fund.

Aging in place

Living in my tiny house has positively impacted my life, especially considering my health challenges. Despite spinal surgeries and muscle spasms, I maintain my independence with the help of physical therapy, acupuncture, and a supportive community.

The tiny house's design allows me to move around safely, holding onto surfaces to prevent falls.

Thank you Peggy. I just recently turned 62 and I'm in the throes of important decisions on where I want to live and how that looks. I love the idea of having lower utility bills. I own my home and albeit is considered small as it's under 1000 sq. ft.. I feel going smaller would be no issue for me. Your home is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. I love your porch and enjoy stormy days too. Thanks again for sharing. Cheers to your happy and healthy attitude! ~Tessie
