My Ten Favourite Decor Items From the Dollar Store

For many people, myself included, shopping at stores like Pier One for decorative items just isn’t an option. But, over the years, I’ve discovered you can often score useful or decorative items at a dollar store. It’s more possible than you might first imagine.

Here are my 10 favourite decor items from the dollar store.

Cushion Covers

From plain to patterned, dollar stores have a variety of cushion covers that make reusing the sofa cushions you already have easy and fun.

It’s cheaper than buying new cushions all the time and you won’t have to worry about storing or re-homing any extras.

Cushions

While I will always choose to re-cover, once in a while I can’t resist a cushion I’ve seen like this on-trend and very soft leaf cushion. The best part is, it didn’t cost any more than a cushion cover! Faux Fur, geometric, textured – I’ve seen them all at Dollarama at one time or another.

Glass Vases

I’ve seen a lot of different shapes and sizes of vases at the dollar store. To me, it doesn’t make any sense to spend $10 or more on something you can get for less than half that price at Dollarama.

Dollar Tree has some really nice smaller vases. The chimney and small fish bowl vases are among my favourites there.

Plush Throws

There’s nothing like a soft-to-the-touch throw on a chilly night and they’re great for simply draping over the arm of a chair or on the end of your bed for decorative purposes. I’ve seen some really nice, full-sized microfibre throws at Dollarama in a variety of colours and textures.

Artwork

You might not think it, but I’ve snagged some really nice pieces at Dollarama. I may not be able to buy into “real” art, but I often find pieces that make my day and fit my vintage inclinations at the dollar store. These beautifully framed pictures are a great size too at 14 by 16-inches, including the frame.

Frames

I can’t remember the last time I bought a frame anywhere but at a dollar store. Dollarama has them in a variety of popular sizes up to 11 x 14 inches. I recently picked up this 8 x 10 that’s trimmed in gold and has a raised mat.

Candles

From tea lights to votives to pillar candles, dollar stores have ‘em all, and in a variety of colours to suit any décor/season. They’ve also got the popular flame-less wax candles and battery-operated tea lights can be had in seasonal colours as well as plain white in a variety of sizes.

Decorative Mirrors

This grouping of mirrors was cobbled together with finds from two different dollar stores. The larger one is from Dollarama and the two smaller ones came from Dollar Tree. Of course, you can get the plainer, framed variety as well.

Tchotchkes

This small white ceramic @ sign was found at Dollar Tree and holds pride of place on my living room bookshelf. I also grabbed a gold feather-shaped trinket tray and pretty gold heart-within-a-heart the same size as the @.

Naturally, with dollar store knick-knacks, it’s all too easy to fall into the realm of tacky, so it’s important to be choosy. That being said, it’s really all about personal taste and what makes you happy.

Faux Flowers and Greenery

You might think you need to go to Michael’s to find good quality fake flowers, but I’ve never found that to be the case. I nabbed this small bonsai tree at Dollarama when they had them a while ago. They’ve also got potted faux succulents. There’s always a good variety of “everyday” flowers and you can always find the colours of whatever season it may be.

Overall, when you’ve got an urge to decorate, but your budget is so tight it squeaks, a trip to a dollar store can help to scratch the decorative itch without breaking the bank.
